Gamescon Expo in Cologne, Germany is actually one of the many events in the video game world, and most consider it not as major, though it is one of the largest for Europe. Most people in the industry would associate this time of year with TGS (Tokyo Game Show) coming up in just a few weeks. However the rumors flying was that both the XBox 360 and the PS3 would see price cuts. Microsoft decided rather to announce a big game release in Fable III. I will be the first to admit I don’t know much about this part, I’m sure R will give his input soon on the matter. However Sony used the show to announce the upcoming PS3 Slim with a 120 GB hard drive with the price point cut $100 to $299. This makes it an interesting value propsition because it is now lower than the comparable Microsoft system, plus you get the benefit of a Blu-Ray player. If I wasn’t a poor college student it would definitely make it hard for me to resist finally going out and picking up a high def system. There is an interesting interview with John Koller of Sony on Gamespot. I recommend checking it out for more information on the big moves that happened in Sony. Time will tell how successful it is.
So following up Ghostbusters I decided to pick up inFamous to give it a go. first I dusted off my PS3 because the last time I played it was to watch a blu ray movie. Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, which is know for its Sly Cooper series on the PS2, This game had quite a short marketing history, and was somehow release at the same time as Prototype, a similar genre game.
Beginning as a bike messenger you quickly get thrown into a very bad situation and learn that your life will never be the same. As I played through the missions I realized a few things about playing a game with a super hero. The main thing so many forget is that its about playing as the super hero, experience the power that is associated with that person. Many games become in love with their own Mythology or their story they forget the gamer. The tutorial in the beginning is very integrated in the game and barely noticeable and gives you the basics to get started.
I finished this game in roughly a week and every time I turned this off I wanted to come back and finish just one more mission. I did find as I got farther in the games the controls got harder and as maybe this just means I’m getting old but I found it hard to pull two trigger buttons on the same hand. And right off the bat it throws you into the choose good or evil scenario popping up in many newer games. Once you picked the choice you started to learn different moves depending on your alignment and initially the choice where very black and white and went very gray towards the end.
though I did experience a few issues with loading and the save game display could use a bit of work, I never knew whether I could turn it off or not or if my most recent even had been saved, the game was very enjoyable a must for anyone looking for a ps3 game that will keep your attention, and after your finish it being good you can go back and see how the story line changes and the power difference in the two.
Overall: 8.5/10
Currently Prototype for the PS3, 360, and PC is onsale for $20 dollars off. If you have been contemplating picking it up soon here is your chance.
